Bahía de Banderas is one of the most productive sport fishing destinations in the Pacific. With deep waters just minutes from the marina, you can target trophy species like marlin, sailfish and tuna without spending hours getting to the fishing grounds.
What can you catch in Puerto Vallarta?
- Striped & black marlin — peak May to October
- Sailfish — November to March
- Yellowfin tuna — year-round, peak July to November
- Dorado (mahi-mahi) — May to October
- Rooster fish — inshore, year-round
- Snapper, jack crevalle, bonito — reef & bottom fishing
Inshore vs offshore fishing
Inshore (4 hours) is great for first-timers, families with kids and budget-friendly trips. You\'ll target snapper, jack crevalle and rooster fish close to the coast.
Nearshore (6 hours) covers the reefs and structure between Los Arcos and Yelapa — a balance of variety and comfort.
Offshore / deep sea (8 to 12 hours) is where you go for marlin, sailfish, tuna and dorado. Be ready for an early departure (around 6 a.m.) to maximize fishing time.
Best season for fishing in Puerto Vallarta
The bay produces fish year-round, but May through November is generally the most productive window for big offshore species. Sailfish are best from late fall to early spring. Even in slower months, inshore and reef fishing rarely disappoint.
